Introduction to the module

This introductory course is designed to provide students with a solid foundation in both financial accounting and managerial accounting. The course first emphasizes how different accounting standards—specifically French GAAP (Plan Comptable Général or PCG), International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), and US GAAP—shape financial reporting and decision-making in an international environment. The course then guides students to constructing costs in order to gain a better understanding, to help make decisions (bearing in mind that cost alone should never determine the decision) and to account on one's performance. The course standpoint is not the accountant’s but the one of the manager who needs to understand the management situations for which he or she is accountable and wants to make relevant decisions.

By the end of this course, students are expected to achieve several key learning objectives:
1. Understanding the fundamental role of accounting in organizations and society.
2. Clearly distinguishing between financial accounting (focused on external reporting) and managerial accounting (focused on internal decision-making).
3. Being able to record and interpret basic business.
4. Reading and analyzing core financial statements, including the balance sheet, income statement, and notes.
5. Recognizing key differences among French GAAP, IFRS, and US GAAP.
6. Using basic cost concepts to support managerial decisions.
7. Knowing the possibilities and limits of various costing systems.

Pedagogical methods

Sessions last 2 hours and alternate between lectures, exercises and discussion.
The course topics will be presented by the teacher in lectures supported by visual aids (e.g. PowerPoint slides) and bibliographical aids such as books . Throughout the course, students will be given homework assignments on topics and concepts covered in class. Participation in class and debate with the learners will be encouraged in order to better assimilate the course content, as well as to better address the questions raised by the learners.

Evaluation and grading system and catch up exams

The overall course assessment is structured around continuous participation and two major in-class assessments conducted during Session 5 and Session 10. These two continuous controls constitute the main body of the grade.
If the module is not validated, a 2-hours retake exam will be scheduled in May. In this case, the mid term marks are cancelled.
