Introduction to the module
The objective of this course is to explore the relationship between the digital economy and the use of personal data in an increasingly connected world. Today, data has become a key economic asset for companies, allowing them to optimize their services, improve decision-making, and personalize interactions with users. However, the use of personal data raises critical questions, particularly regarding privacy protection, fairness, and legal implications.
We will begin by examining the origins of the concept of “privacy” in economic theory, where discussions about privacy and personal data were often linked to information asymmetry and market inefficiencies. Next, we will delve into the economics of data in the context of the internet and emerging technologies, such as online auctions and artificial intelligence, with a special focus on modern business models that use personal data to generate revenue. Finally, we will address future challenges posed by artificial intelligence and algorithmic biases, studying the economic and ethical effects of these technologies.
This course combines academic concepts with practical case studies, enabling students to understand not only the economic theory of privacy but also its practical implications in today’s business world.
Evaluation and grading system and catch up exams
Assessment will be based on graded practical work, including presentations of academic articles on topics related to the data economy, online auctions, and AI. The grading system will assess students’ understanding of the economic implications of company strategies involving personal data and emerging technologies.
