Introduction to the module
Contemporary societies are evolving in an environment shaped by accelerating technological change, geopolitical uncertainty, ecological transformations, the digitalization of social interactions, emerging forms of governance, and profound reconfigurations of work. In response to these developments, future managers and engineers must cultivate analytical capacities that extend beyond purely technical or economic approaches.
This course offers an interdisciplinary perspective on the major challenges of the contemporary world by drawing on insights from sociology, philosophy, political science, history, and science and technology studies (STS). Students will be encouraged to examine the processes of rationalization that shape organizations, the social implications of digital technologies, the transformation of decision-making, emerging geopolitical dynamics, and the evolving relationships between technology, democracy, and power. Rather than providing ready-made answers, the course aims to foster critical thinking capable of engaging with the complexity of contemporary phenomena and informing decision-making processes that will increasingly require the integration of multiple dimensions, including anthropological, geopolitical, sociological, and philosophical considerations.
