Introduction to the module
This course offers a comprehensive introduction to organisation theory, beginning with foundational definitions of markets and organisations before exploring the core challenges organisations face in achieving their objectives—namely, the physical and cognitive limitations of their members and the misalignment of preferences between individuals and the organisation as a whole. Students examine various theoretical approaches to addressing these challenges, tracing the historical evolution of organisational thought. The course then broadens its scope to contemporary and specialized contexts, including the role of information and communication technologies, platform organisations operating as two-sided markets and digital communities, not-for-profit organisations, and even criminal organisations analyzed through an organisational lens. An introduction to game theory adds a strategic decision-making dimension to the analysis. Throughout the term, students apply these concepts through two group work assignments, culminating in a review session and a final exam.
