Introduction to the module

The "Research Design" series of courses aims to assist doctoral students from the very beginning of their research, by examining the role of the different stages of the process and ensuring overall coherence. It is based on the principle that the balance between the problematic, the theoretical framework, the method, the analysis and the discussion must be constructed, reflected upon, reformulated and justified. This balance is the backbone of the thesis. The two weeks that can be attended independently. They are best followed in the first or second year of the PhD.
This series of seminars allows one to meet a wide variety of established researchers and approaches to research. They take place over two blocked weeks, which students should have prepared by working on their own research. During each week, five or six half-days are devoted to presentations and discussions with researchers, internal or external to ITM-BS, representing a wide variety of research approaches and practices. One half-day is devoted to the discussion of classical texts. On the other half days, doctoral students present to their peers and to senior researchers. These seminars allow for a review and reflection of the entire research project and develop a cohort spirit among the doctoral students. They help prepare the presentation to the thesis committee. A supervisor follows the participants during the four weeks in order to ensure overall coherence and to make the links between interventions.

Evaluation and grading system and catch up exams

The evaluation of the effectiveness of the seminar takes place during successive presentations of the doctoral student's research, notably in the laboratory or research team seminar, the thesis committee and the thesis defence. When major weaknesses concerning the methodological approach are identified, it is assessed whether the corresponding point cannot be integrated into this training.
