Introduction to the module
The main objective of this course is to provide students with Geopolitics definitions, concepts, and analytical tools that will enable them to master and assess the different types of current and emerging geopolitical conflicts. The topics of this course will cover international law, political and social global trendings.
At the end of this course, the student will be able to:
identity the relationships between international politics and markets
identify relevant geopolitical risks and how these could affect economic actors in general and multinational companies in particular
understand how geopolitical risks can be analyzed, predicted and managed;
use the theories that are essential to the understanding of the phenomenon of geopolitical risk
use theoretical and empirical knowledge to analyze the current and future landscape of geopolitical risks.
understand the future evolution and patterns of transformation of geopolitical strategies of the countries of the world.
1) conduct a country risk analysis of a selected host country on their own;
2) identify appropriate risk management strategies which companies could put in place in order to hedge against risks when doing business in high-risk countries and regions.

Content : structure and schedule
Unit 1 : Introduction to Geopolitics : Concepts and definitions.
Intersession 1 : two exercices based
_on a reflexion on the theories of the course of this week (the pros and cons of both the heart and rimland theories/ two moments in history where international conflicts were directly caused by states../Theory impactful on the global community (especially in Geopolitics).
_ and on a video.
Unit2 : The issue of Ressources.
Intersession 2 : one exercice : Writing a bibliography to know how to cite sources.
Unit 3 : The reshaping of the world political Order. + Oral presentation including debate and feedback from the presentation
Unit 4 : MNC's and the geography of global investment. + Oral presentation including debate and feedback from the presentation
Intersession 4 : Exercice about a video (reflection about the effects of the Covid crisis on Emerging Makets and on Industrialized countries / about the possibility of future pandemics spell for DFI long term according to regions).
Unit 5 : Borders, Boundaries and Virtual Worlds.
Final project in order to use Geopolitics to help us understand, explain and predict international behavior. Analysis of cyber activity over the past decade demonstrates a clear link between geopolitical motivation and state-sponsored cyber campaigns. Geopolitical intelligence should be combined with traditional threat intelligence-gathering techniques to help organizations determine how, when, and where they are likely to be targeted.
Top geopolitical trends in 2021: what the future holds ?
Intersession 5 : Exercice about a video (reflection about the effects of the Covid crisis on Emerging Makets and on Industrialized countries / about the possibility of future pandemics spell for DFI long term according to regions).
Intersession 5 Final class : Writing in 1 page in English reflection on the inequality faced with cybercrime and the pandemic between the industrialized countries and those in Global South (UAE..).

Pedagogical methods
This course will be divided in 5 learning units spread over
Classes are 3 hours with a 15m half time break
Class lecturers by professors (group exercises, debate, discussions). Online classes will put an emphasized on participation.
Class discussions and analyses of ongoing events in the media using audiovisual material.
Presentations by learners of their work.
Evaluation and grading system and catch up exams
Assessment
· Individual assignments: company risk strategy project (40% )
o Students will choose with the professor a case study to be analyzed of a company (such as an Elite Hotel group wishing to implant its in an Indian Ocean island nation or a US based private equity firm seeking to invest in Eastern Europe)
o The paper will be a strategic analysis of the company and its needs in a short memo format (5 pages single spaced max).
o Specifics will be gone over in class the first week.
o The objective is to both work on written English and demonstrate a grasp of the intellectual gymnastics necessary for businesses to have a strategy in a given geopolitical context.
· Group assignments Presentation (in English) country risk analysis (30%)
o 20m per group in English WITH a presentation
o Based on a country in Africa, Middle East, Latin America etc. (check with professor first on the country)
o 4 people maximum per group
· Interactive class activities (online forum, instant polls, reflection pieces on current events) and weekly journal on readings (30%)
Module Policies
Professor-Student Communication
● The professor will contact the students through their school email address (IMT-BS/TSP) and the Moodle portal. No communication via personal email addresses will take place. It is the student responsibility to regularly check their IMT-BS/TSP mailbox.
● Students can communicate with the professor by emailing him/her to his institutional address. If necessary, it is possible to meet the professor in his office during office-hours or by appointment.
Students with accommodation needs
If a student has a disability that will prevent from completing the described work or require any kind of accommodation, he may inform the program director (with supporting documents) as soon as possible. Also, students are encouraged to discuss it with the professor.
Class behavior
● Out of courtesy for the professor and classmates, all mobile phones, electronic games or other devices that generate sound should be turned off during class.
● Students should avoid disruptive and disrespectful behavior such as: arriving late, leaving early, careless behavior (e.g. sleeping, reading a non-course material, using vulgar language, over-speaking, eating, drinking, etc.). A warning may be given on the first infraction of these rules. Repeated violators will be penalized and may face expulsion from the class and/or other disciplinary proceedings.
● The tolerated delay is 5 minutes. Attendance will be declared on Moodle during these 5 minutes via a QR code provided by the teacher at each course start.
● Student should arrive on time for exams and other assessments. No one will be allowed to enter the classroom once the first person has finished the exam and left the room. There is absolutely no exception to this rule. No student can continue to take an exam once the time is up. No student may leave the room during an examination unless he / she has finished and handed over all the documents.
● In the case of remote learning, the student must keep his camera on unless instructed otherwise by the professor.
Honor code
IMT-BS is committed to a policy of honesty in the academic community. Conduct that compromises this policy may result in academic and / or disciplinary sanctions. Students must refrain from cheating, lying, plagiarizing and stealing. This includes completing your own original work and giving credit to any other person whose ideas and printed materials (including those from the Internet) are paraphrased or quoted directly. Any student who violates or helps another student violate academic behavior standards will be penalized according to IMT-BS rules.
