Under the guidance of an experienced teacher and speaker of English, students will strive to individually develop their writing and public speaking abilities.

Acquis d'apprentissage

The objective of this course is to improve students’ English skills while acquiring some knowledge about American culture. Coursework will involve all of the major skills: listening, speaking, reading comprehension and some writing. Students will participate in group discussions as well as present information individually around related themes. The course includes regular sessions of vocabulary review and grammar revision.


In this course we will examine aspects of America through comic films. We will begin with Forrest Gump, an amusing confection of visual tricks, great acting and classic themes set during 25 years of momentous American history. We will look closely at some of the serious events behind the comedy as well as discuss some of the film’s themes.

Attentes du cours

Students are expected to display interest and participate actively in class. Homework assignments must be handed in punctually. Students are responsible for learning vocabulary and grammar lessons. Students will be asked to present oral presentations on topics related to the film as part of the class content. Students are expected to keep up with the film on their own time in the event of an unavoidable absence. All electronic devices must be turned off BEFORE entering the class.

Approches pédagogiques

The classroom experience will focus on achieving high-level written and oral communication. To achieve this goal, students will work through a rigorous drafting & editing process both of their written work & oral presentations. Specific coaching will be provided to help students meet the goals they set themselves during the semester.

A typical class will begin with vocabulary: new and old. The film segment will be introduced, viewed and summarized. Class discussion will revolve around selected topics. A student will present a theme related to the film segment. After break there will be a short grammar lesson. The end of the class time will vary in terms of activities. Homework will follow from the coursework.
