This class will cover the history of the technological advancements of the 20th century and their impact on the modern world today. In parallel, we will study the history of this period and compare how the changes to everyday life created by technological changes during the 20th century impacted international affairs. Students will reflect on the impact of inventions, and question what “technological advancement” is, while learning about the history of the 20th century. Our main focus will be on the changes brought to the modern world by electricity, photography, film, television, telephones, cars, airplanes, subways, nuclear power, space travel, satellites, computers and the Internet.

Acquis d'apprentissage

During this class, students can expect to add to their knowledge of world history, the history of technological development, and scientific development during the 20th century. They will learn how to formulate their own opinions on the modern way of life, the technological advancements of the 20th century, and their impact around the world.


Students will learn scientific vocabulary pertaining to technology, while also building a vocabulary to talk about historical movements of the 20th century. They will learn about technological and historical changes in the world during the 20th century and the development of “modernity.” They will be able to tell the history of the 20th century through technological inventions and make connections to the way that these innovations have impacted the way that people live throughout the world, both positively and negatively. Students will also be expected to use historical examples from the 20th century to demonstrate the impacts of technological advancements, and question what technological advancement or “progress” is. Additionally, students will be able to define “modernity” in their own words and to develop their own ideas regarding the relationship between technological advancements of the 20th century and the modern way of living on a global scale by the end of the course.

Attentes du cours

Students are expected to be open to new ideas and to be capable of assimilating them as part of an ongoing process to improve their writing and presenting skills in English. There will be a minimum of two (2) written activities and two (2) oral reports. The level of interaction is similar to that encountered in professional life.


Grading will be on a scale of 0 to 20. 50% CC and 50% CF1
Validating the tandem course will add 2 bonus points in the continuous assesment grade of the corresponding language course.
