Introduction

This course is intended for students who wish to improve their writing skills, reading comprehension, and confidence in oral expression in English, while deepening their awareness of American and British cultures. What is freedom? How are we to understand the differences between “freedom from” and “freedom to,” between rights and responsibilities? Is scientific or artistic freedom an unqualified good, no matter what its consequences? The discourse of freedom in the USA is characterized by a troubling ambiguity: how can we give an account of the fact that throughout US history, freedom has been regarded as a self-evident value, while so many people have been excluded from its benefits? How do the ideals of freedom and self-determination shape the current debate in the United Kingdom over Brexit? We will discuss these and related questions with the support of short readings, films, and podcasts, as well as articles on current events from the US and British press (ex. The New York Times, The Guardian). In the context of this theme, emphasis will be placed on academic writing, professional-style oral presentations, and active participation.
