Learners will increase their level of confidence in English Spoken-interaction, through energetic, group-centered activities, supplemented by intensive vocabulary-learning.
By the end of the course learners will:
-have acquired a solid vocabulary base from which to work
-have increased motivation to attend English language courses
-have acquired conversational automatisms and improved their English pronunciation
-be able to overcome linguistic problems to make themselves understood
-be more confident and competent in general conversational in English
-be more ready to contribute during English language classes
-have practiced conversational English through a variety of task-based RPs
-have increased their functional and strategic listening skills
-have understood and practiced a range of features involved in clear pronunciation
-have ‘played games’ and ‘had fun’ in English, in pairs, groups, and as a class.
-Be able to express their opinions clearly, and agree & disagree in English
-Have produced and delivered a presentation about a current English-language cultural artefact of their choosing (TV, Film, Book etc.)
-Be ready to participate in a higher-level language courses.
Learners will improve their vocabulary, spoken confidence and motivation in English, with the aim of increasing the speed of progression in further language courses.
Learners are expected to maintain a high level of attention during sessions, and be ready to ‘get involved’ in the activities, maintaining English throughout pair work, group work, and whole-class discussion.
Learners will be given a vocabulary booklet from which they will be expected to learn and revise key elements of vocabulary (approx.. 40 items / week)
Students are expected to be open to new ideas and to be capable of assimilating them as part of an ongoing process to improve their speaking skills in English.
Learners should arrive to class ready to participate with the necessary materials. In addition to the regular classroom materials`, this includes a computer equipped with a webcam, microphone, and active high-speed internet connection for the duration of each session.
The participation grade will be based on the following criteria:
• Punctuality: on-time and ready to work (non-disruptive in time-keeping)
• Motivation: Only speaking English in Class, no use of translation tools
• Professional: Appropriate setting, actions and interaction for professional context.
• Engagement: Participating appropriately in whole-class activities
• Focus / Responsiveness: Remaining focused during teacher input and on class tasks. Responds immediately and appropriately when asked.
• Committed to Homework: Homework delivered on time and to the best of your ability.
• Positive: Contributing to positive class atmosphere
All Grading will be on a scale of 0 to 20, unless otherwise stated.
1/3 CF: A final exam based on vocabulary and course content
1/3 CC: Selected Classroom assignments, as detailed by the teacher.
1/3 PP: Presence & Participation (each representing 50% of the PP grade)
Presence: Students will receive credit for attending class regularly, up to a maximum of 1/6 of their total grade. Unjustified absences will thus have a direct impact on student’s overall grade.
Participation: Students will be assessed on their participation in class, according to the criteria in ‘classroom expectations’
It is the responsibility of the student to make up for any missed work in order to avoid these absences further impacting final grades.
Validating the tandem programme will add 2 bonus points to a student’s CC grade (CC) of the corresponding language course.
CEFR Grade (A1-C2)
Students will NOT be assessed as to their CEFR grade in this class.
There is NO DIRECT RELATION between a student’s CC/CF/PP and their CEFR level.
