Introduction to the course
"The tremendous power of persuasion inherent in the main ideologies of our times is not accidental.'
Hannah Arendt, The Origins of Totalitarianism
Propaganda communications are observable everywhere we care to look, in every walk of life; From the Stone Age to the Internet Age, propaganda has shaped society, for the better or the worse. Despite this ubiquity and the measurable effect it has had, it is also seemingly invisible to the wider society. It is everywhere and nowhere at the same time.
This course looks at the science of propaganda: its wider effects on society and the human experience, and how it shapes individual and societal behaviour. We will try to get a better understanding of what propaganda actually is and how it developed historically, and how it functions through media.
