Movies inside and out introduces students to the discussion in English of different approaches to the language of movies. What is a movie? It is a story related to an audience thanks to sound and image that together build towards ending. A movie is a text.

Finalités de l’apprentissage

Working in English with an experienced teacher as guide, students are encouraged to develop an individual perspective on seeing a movie and to share their ideas in English during classroom sessions. Each class students are provided with a movie as a noteworthy example of a movie treatment of a particular theme such as drama, comedy, crime or science fiction. Each genre is analyzed in terms of its take on the world.
After being a form of popular culture for much of the twentieth century, movies have today become legitimate objects of mental inquiry. We therefore explore how issues that concern the audience of specific movies (i.e. heroic fantasy, suspense films, road movies) appear through the eyes of various filmmakers.

Learners will aim to master the fundamental language of academic English as applicable across a variety of skills and contexts, and work to apply this knowledge in the creation of academic-style documents fit for purpose in an international university. Participating students will be encouraged to apply for an international academic exchange at the end of the first year.

Objectifs de l’apprentissage

• Understand the key components of the academic writing genre
• Produce basic academic texts in terms of organisation, patterns of argument, cohesion, formality and process.

• Use techniques to engage in reasoned debate

"All Grading will be on a scale of 0 to 20, unless otherwise stated.
CF: A written synthesis produced in an academic style, of two texts - one written, one video.
CC: 3 Selected Classroom assignments, as detailed by the teacher (2 written texts, one Presentation).
PP: Presence & Participation (each representing 50% of the PP grade)"
NF = 1/3 CF + 1/3 CC + 1/3 PP
"Evaluation is constructed with 2/3 of the final grade relating to effort, presence and work completed in class. 1/3 is attributed to the CF.

Presence: Students will receive credit for attending class regularly, up to a maximum of 1/6 of their total grade. Unjustified absences will thus have a direct impact on student’s overall grade.
Participation: Students will be assessed on their participation in class, according to the criteria in ‘classroom expectations’

Validating the tandem programme will add 2 bonus points to a student’s CC grade (CC) of the corresponding language course.
It is the responsibility of the student to make up for any missed work in order to avoid these absences further impacting final grades.

CEFR Grade (A1-C2)
Students will be continuously assessed as to their language level relative to the CEFR criteria.
There is NO DIRECT RELATION between a student’s CC/CF/PP and their CEFR level.

For more information, please refer to the LSH website."
