Introduction au module
Welcome to the Theatre world! This course introduces students to different basic drama exercises such as warming-up, trust-building or concentration games. The course will then go on to present various improvisation games to promote quick reactivity and spontaneity. Then students will choose, study and perform different scenes taken from plays, films or series (Oscar Wilde, Harold Pinter, Quentin Tarantino, Monty Python, Woody Allen, Breaking bad…). Students will develop a trained eye by watching carefully and analysing their performance and the performance of others. They will take notes during each session and will write a full report of this progression
The purpose of the course is to consider learning English not as an end in itself but as a means for students to express themselves in a meaningful context, which is what acting offers. By taking risks using the language and having to adapt to people and situations, students should be able to overcome any possible “language blocks”.
In the words of Alan Maley and Alan Duff in Drama techniques in language learning, students will be encouraged to “use the skills we most need when speaking a language: adaptability, speed of reaction, sensitivity to tone, in one word appropriateness.”
Système de notation et modalités de rattrapage
All Grading will be on a scale of 0 to 20, unless otherwise stated.
Grading will be on a scale of 0 to 20.
1/3 CF: Performing a scene in front of fellow students in the group: April 12th
1/3 CCs:
CC1. Writing the autobiography of the character you are playing: January 25th
CC2. Mid-term performance to show the class your progress in the scene and obtain useful feedback: March 8th
CC3. A final written report (suggested: 3200-4000 words per group) on the scene worked on: problems, errors made, ideas found, any breakthroughs and reasons / justifications for each: April 5th
1/3 PP: Presence and participation
The CF makes up 1/3 of the final grade for the module (UV/UE).
The CC makes up 2/3 of the final grade for the module (UV/UE). This CC grade is made up of equal parts ‘PP’ grade (Presence & Participation), and ‘CC*’ Grade (3 Selected Classroom assignments, as detailed by the teacher: 2 Written Production assignments, and 1 Oral Presentation).
Presence Grade: Learners will receive credit for attending class regularly, up to a maximum of 1/6 of their total grade. Unjustified absences will thus have a direct impact on a learner’s overall grade.
Participation Grade: Learners will be assessed on their participation in class, according to the criteria in ‘classroom expectations’
Validating the tandem program will add 2 bonus points to a learner’s CC grade of the corresponding language course.
CEFR Grade (A1-C2)
Learners will be continuously assessed as to their language level relative to CEFR criteria.
There is NO DIRECT RELATION between a learner’s CC*/CF/PP and their CEFR level.
